Coit Tower
A tower built in 1932 atop Telegraph Hill with funds bequeathed by Lilly Coit after her 1929 death. The 180 foot tower sits on a 288 foot hill. Local artists tried to halt construction claiming that a tower two-thirds the height of the hill on which it stood would be unesthetic and that the top was designed to resemble a fire hose nozzle to mock Lillie Coit's fondness for the Fire Department.
